Discover the quiet elegance of a bygone era
at Country Hill Inn, a fine eating establishment of uncompromising
standard situated in an old Dutch homestead.
The CountryHill Inn possesses a rich history
dating back to 1694, when the land for this estate was conveyed to Hendrick
Hop. In 1818 his grandson John I. Hop chose a site on high ground commanding
an unobstructed panoranma of the countryside and, together with his wife,
Mary, built the house that stands today. The Federal-style house was described
as "elegant" and "one of spaciousness, comfort and delicate harmony."
Livestock on John Hoop's estate was plentiful and crops grown included:
strawberries
buckwheat and
flax.
John was described as "a man of superior mind" who marketed "his
produce and butter in New York, the latter always being the finest quality
for which he was frequently awarded a premium." The historic property,
deeded for 252 years from one Hop's generation to another, was leased in
1937 and eventually sold "for use as a restaurant and sale of liquor."
Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, this elegant farmhouse
continues as the restaurant known as Country Hill Inn.
